honestly just wasn't sure on the size. i'm 6'1 220, usually an XL in most stuff

XL is the right call. Ours are a true-to-size fit with a little extra room through the shoulders — a lot of guys your build stay in XL and it sits right after a wash. The 2XL would swim on you.
